Play

January 16 - April 12, 2015

Opening Reception: January 16, 5-7pm

Swamp surrounded by ferns and trees

This show features artists who embody aspects of play in their work. It also examines play as an action or as an inherent part of being human.

Play embraces the impulsive and resourceful creative process. Artists transgress convention and enlist the viewer as collaborator by presenting participatory and interactive works. A playhouse from common-place ingredients alongside modified or reimagined games, reveal the result of invention, experimentation, and risk taking. The fierce and simple presence of these objects poignantly foregrounds how critically human it is to Play. Much of the artwork in Play is interactive or participatory, with some pieces evolving and changing over the course of the show. Several artist in the show are involving the larger community in creating projects. Perhaps most importantly the show asks visitors to the gallery to play as they interact with the show. The hope is to provide visitors with a more complex understanding of how play shapes the lives of artists and of our society as a whole.
