The Current is honored to present an exhibition of photographs by internationally renowned artist Catherine Opie, in our galleries from January 19 through April 9 of 2022. Catherine Opie’s photographs of rural and urban American scenes investigate the parallels between natural and political landscapes, and their connections to our sense of identity and community. Opie’s work in this exhibition focuses on climate change. Large scale photographs of swamps, national parks, and other abstracted iconic landscapes are both gorgeous documentations and a quiet plea for environmental preservation. Her swamp series in particular evoke not only the dangers of climate change, but the precarious state of our country, as calls to “drain the swamp” erode fundamental structures of democracy. Opie was born in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1961, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, and has shown work in solo exhibitions at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
