Matthew Ward from the Vermont Department of Health and the Medical Reserve Corp and Sarah Henshaw from the Lamoille Area Recovery Network will discuss their organizations' missions and impact on communities affected by flooding and flooding preparedness, response, and recovery. They will tie the increasing likelihood of floods to climate change and promote ways for community members to increase their civic engagement and contribute to the recovery of those with unmet needs through volunteer opportunities and donations.

Today as we honor the work and life of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on our own values and strategic plan at The Current. Our commitment to addressing issues of climate justice, social justice, inclusivity, and equity through art, action, and informed discourse can be seen through our exhibitions and public programs. SAVE THE DATE for the opening reception of "Water Writes the Garden" a solo exhibition by Mary Mattingly on January 15 from 5–7 p.m.
“Water Writes the Garden” unites photographs, sculptures, and poetry around water’s role as timekeeper and storyteller. It explores how water makes marks and sculpts environments through cyclical formation and erosion. Centered on the notion that water writes, washes, and rewrites the land, the work invites people into slow rhythms of memory.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores ecological relationships through sculptural ecosystems, performative installations, and research-based collaborations. Rooted in a deep inquiry into urban ecology and interdependence, her work addresses urgent issues around water, food systems, and climate adaptation.
Her public projects, such as Swale, a floating food forest in New York City’s waterways; Waterpod, a self-sufficient living structure on a barge; and the Flock House Project, a series of mobile habitats, reimagine civic infrastructure through community engagement and poetic provocation.

🌍 The Current Goes International!
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting artists and fostering collaboration, The Current is proud to be a partner in ARCA — Arte.Rigenerazioni.Comunità.Abitare (Art, Regeneration, Community, Living), a special project of international artist residencies and participatory cultural activities organized by Silvia Di Gregorio.
This initiative brings together 18 partners across 11 municipalities in Italy, each hosting a unique artist and creative exchange.
As partners in ARCA, we invited Vermont artist Brian Collier to serve as Artist-in-Residence in Fontecchio, Italy, for the month of October, hosted by our collaborator Todd Thomas Brown, founder of @fontecchio_international.
While in Fontecchio, Brian will be:
* Leading a three-part art and ecology workshop
* Collaborating with local artists
* Engaging residents in building personal “natural stories” of their town
* Creating new artwork and installations to be shared throughout the community
This is The Current at our best: supporting artists, engaging in community, and creating connection and conversation between our small town and the rest of the world. Thank you for being part of it.
