✨”Exposed 2025” Artist Spotlight: Christopher Curtis
At The Current we love to showcase artwork by local Vermont artists in our exhibitions whenever possible. Christopher Curtis’s work, “Sanctuary” is currently on view on Main Street in Stowe as part of our outdoor sculpture exhibition, “Exposed.”
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“‘Sanctuary’ is made of a glacial erratic recovered in Shelburne VT that was transported by ice about 40 miles. During that slow journey the stone ground against other rocks and sand creating the smooth surface with parallel scratches you can see on the right side of the boulder. These straia are at least 10,000 years old.
The bedrock that contained the stone formed about 500 million years ago in a warm shallow sea in a location very close to the equator.
The inspiration for the sculpture came from visits to ancient temples in Egypt and Peru. The unknown uses of such stone ritual sites create a mystique that goes beyond the physical aspect of the structure. If you are left wondering what the sculpture is for, then the mystique is successful.”

Our next session of 🧘🏽 “How to Move as Easily as Possible” with Polly Motley is THIS THURSDAY from 9–10:00 a.m.
Polly Motley, professional dancer and choreographer, will lead a body/mind session designed to release unnecessary tension and effort and help us move more easily in daily life. Focused attention, especially to the out breath, will allow more space into the body as we rock, roll, twist, and take the time our bodies need to let go of unneeded effort. This class is created to be accessible and easy, with exercises that begin on the floor and end on our feet.

Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist relating to perspective, identity, commodity, media and popular culture. His work incorporates recognizable icons to explore their ability to reinforce generalizations developed around race, gender, and ethnicity. His iconic photography series, B®anded, superimposed bodies of Black men with the Nike logo, recalling the history of branding slaves in America as well as the literal and figural objectification of Black male bodies in contemporary culture. Thomas’ multimedia practice explores 20th-century protest images and often overlooked historical narratives. By adding hidden layers, Thomas asks the viewer to consider who is included in history and who is erased.
Thomas’s work is on view at The Current as part of the new indoor exhibition “It often rhymes” and was also featured in last year’s outdoor sculpture exhibition, “Exposed 2024.”

We’re thrilled to be welcoming Minh Ly, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont, to The Current next Thursday, 8/14 from 5-6:00 p.m for a public lecture —“Currently Speaking: Democracy Demands Accountability”
Ly’s book, “Answering to Us: Why Democracy Demands Accountability,” will be published by Princeton University Press in March 2026. Josiah Ober, the former chair of political science at Stanford, writes, "Answering to Us is a wide ranging and profound exploration of the fundamental value of collective self-government and what it takes to have and keep it. Ly’s original argument for democracy as equal accountability draws on an extraordinary mastery of political history, moral philosophy, and empirical social science."
The “Currently Speaking” series hosts experts in various contemporary art genres and media to encourage casual discourse and meaningful interactions between our community, speakers, and the art they showcase. All series events are free to the public. No reservation is required, and the gallery will be open beforehand for viewing the current exhibition. Refreshments will be served.

Yockey, a Detroit native now based in NYC, holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has exhibited internationally, including at the Whitney Museum’s Peace Tower, Slag Gallery, and venues in Beijing and Grand Rapids. He currently serves as artist-in-residence at the Athena Foundation and works alongside renowned sculptor Mark di Suvero.

We’re thrilled to welcome Rajnii Eddins back to The Current this Saturday at 4:15pm as part of our Summer Exhibitions Opening Festival. He will be performing three poems in keeping with the theme of freedom and democracy in our exhibition, “It often rhymes.”
Originally from Seattle, Washington, Spoken Word Poet/Emcee, Teaching Artist and Facilitator Rajnii Eddins has been engaging diverse community audiences for over 33 years. He was the youngest member of the Afrikan American Writers Alliance at age 11 and has been actively sharing with youth and community in Vermont and throughout New England since 2010.
Rajnii’s diverse talents and passions allow him to offer a wide variety of powerful experiences that foster connection, learning, and mutual growth. He is deeply devoted to building community and thrives at creating spaces that are educational, explorative, and celebratory, whether in a classroom, a conference hall, a community center, or online.

Today is JUNETEENTH - a day of remembrance, liberation, and a celebration of black freedom. It’s also a day to reflect on the ongoing struggle for justice and equity.
In celebration, we’re spotlighting work by For Freedoms (Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur in collaboration with Eric Gottesman and Wyatt Gallery of For Freedoms), featured in our new exhibition, “It often rhymes,” opening today with a public reception on July 12.
A reinterpretation of Norman Rockwell’s iconic paintings, these photographs center artists, activists, community organizers, and everyday people to reflect a more honest, inclusive vision of American freedom.
The original “Four Freedoms” - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear - were first articulated by FDR in 1941. For Freedoms brings them into the present, declaring diversity an essential and undeniable component of freedom.
ABOUT FOR FREEDOMS: A national platform for creative civic engagement, For Freedoms empowers artists and communities to deepen dialogue, build belonging, and imagine a more just, joyful future, together.

In celebration, we’re spotlighting work by For Freedoms (Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur in collaboration with Eric Gottesman and Wyatt Gallery of For Freedoms), featured in our new exhibition, “It often rhymes,” opening today with a public reception on July 12.
A reinterpretation of Norman Rockwell’s iconic paintings, these photographs center artists, activists, community organizers, and everyday people to reflect a more honest, inclusive vision of American freedom.
The original “Four Freedoms” - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear - were first articulated by FDR in 1941. For Freedoms brings them into the present, declaring diversity an essential and undeniable component of freedom.

Klepto Kidd; and exhibiting artist, Timothy Curtis both at The Current and at SMS, as they learned about mark-making and calligraphy, creating their own monikers or tags.
This is what we do best: bringing big art and ideas to our small town and engaging our community, making art accessible to all.
