✨”It often rhymes” Artist Spotlight: For Freedoms (Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur in collaboration with Eric Gottesman and Wyatt Gallery of For Freedoms)
For Freedoms was founded in 2016 by a coalition of artists to deepen civic engagement through the arts. They provide artists, institutions, and communities a decentralized space for connection, and the tools to support their creative capacities and resilience as cultural workers. Together, the network is building more robust civic dialogue, and inspiring a sense of belonging and responsibility for one another. For Freedoms envisions a joyful, interconnected world where creativity is seen as integral to enhancing civic expression, listening, healing, and justice.
There are less than 2 weeks left to experience For Freedoms' work in our galleries so be sure to stop in before "It often rhymes" closes on October 18.

✨”It often rhymes” Artist Spotlight: Nicholas Galanin
Examining the complexities of contemporary Indigenous identity, culture, and representation, Nicholas Galanin works from his experience as a Lingít and Unangax̂ artist. Embedding incisive observation and reflection into his oftentimes provocative work, he aims to redress the widespread misappropriation of Indigenous visual culture, the impact of colonialism, as well as collective amnesia. Galanin reclaims narrative and creative agency, while demonstrating contemporary Indigenous art as a continually evolving practice.
Artist Statement: "The neon sign embodies capitalism, its text a pointed reference to the murders of Eric Garner, George Floyd, Tyre Nichols, and all people of color who have been murdered at the hands of police and agents of the American state. Asking participants to take a knee is a position of deference-turned-refusal; to scream until you can’t breathe encompasses protest aimed at tearing down the systems built to enforce Whiteness, White privilege, heteropatriarchy, and capitalist control."
Featured work: "Neon American Anthem (red)," Nicholas Galanin. Courtesy of the artist and Peter Blum Gallery

Join us THIS THURSDAY, 10/2 at 11 a.m. for 🔉 Sound Experi/ence/ment.
In response to "Neon National Anthem (Red)" by Nicholas Galanin, The Current is hosting a communal response session with professional dancer and singer Polly Motley. There are a myriad of possible cathartic responses to the work's prompt “scream until we can't breathe,” screaming being only one of them. Soothing lullabies, sounds of sorrow, or voices of anger are other possibilities. Motley will lead this hour-long response session in the gallery by gently preparing our voices to create, as a group, a “new national anthem.” The session will begin with a guided preparation that includes breath, voice, and body work that is accessible to all. The preparation is designed to foster comfort and confidence in the group as well as in our own voices. Each person's voice will be encouraged and respected as it is expressed simultaneously with other voices. Silence will also be welcome. This event is free and open to all.
RSVP https://www.thecurrentnow.org/events-list and learn about additional free public programs coming up this fall at The Current.

✨”It often rhymes” Artist + Speaker Spotlight: Dona Ann McAdams
Dona Ann McAdams has been a visual storyteller and social documentarian for 50 years. Her beautiful and arresting images here are from a portfolio of street protests, demonstrations, and political actions focusing on queer rights, racial equity, and women's issues. Taken between 1981 and 2020, these photographs explicitly underscore how history reverberates—in the present, reminding us that freedom and democracy are never guaranteed, but must be continually pursued and protected.
McAdams will be presenting a mini-documentary, directed by John R. Killacky, with a follow-up Q&A this Thursday in our galleries at 5 p.m. as part of our Currently Speaking Series. Visit the link in our bio for more details and additional upcoming public programs.

🚧✨ We’re still open during renovations! ✨🚧
Please use the front Pond Street entrance when visiting The Current.
Why the construction? We’re expanding our space to make space for 5th grade band AND to launch STEAM @ The Current—a new partnership with Stowe Elementary School that brings science, technology, engineering, arts, and math together in one creative hub.
These renovations will provide a much-needed permanent home for the SES band and a brand-new STEAM Lab, while also giving us more room for youth, teen, and adult art classes.
Thank you for your patience as we build more space for creativity, curiosity, and community.

✨”It often rhymes” Artist Spotlight: Ellen Rothenberg
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Public Address” is a shapeshifter, morphing and changing to be deployed at significant moments of political and socio-economic challenge. Aspects of the installation were called into action in 2023 after the repeal of Roe v. Wade, during the COVID-19 pandemic, at The Women’s March on Washington in 2017, at the Dublin Biennial during Ireland’s 2012 economic downturn, and preceding the U.S. presidential election of 2008.
A series of picket signs is the focus of “Public Address”; ADDRESSING THE CROWD, SCREAMING WITH IMPOTENT RAGE, SHE IS DEFIANT, YOUTH LOOKS LIKE OLD AGE, DISHEVELLED AFTER FIGHTING, ECSTASY ON ARREST. These captions were excerpted from a 1914 British anti-suffrage publication describing images of women in the process of being arrested, moments before, during, and after confrontations with the police. In every employment, the work reverberates with previous moments of political crisis, while revealing unseen aspects of the present.
Ellen Rothenberg’s recent public projects and installations focus on global migration, the labor of citizenship, and the possibilities for individual and collective action. Her research repurposes the archive through presence and emplacement —inhabiting architecture, public spaces, and sites of everyday life. Rothenberg’s work has been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Museum of Fine Arts and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco; The Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen; Royal Festival Hall, London; The Brukenthal National Museum, Sibiu, Romania; The Museum of London, Ontario; among others.
“It often rhymes” is on view in our galleries through October 18.

✨”Exposed 2025” Artist Spotlight: Christopher Curtis
At The Current we love to showcase artwork by local Vermont artists in our exhibitions whenever possible. Christopher Curtis’s work, “Sanctuary” is currently on view on Main Street in Stowe as part of our outdoor sculpture exhibition, “Exposed.”
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“‘Sanctuary’ is made of a glacial erratic recovered in Shelburne VT that was transported by ice about 40 miles. During that slow journey the stone ground against other rocks and sand creating the smooth surface with parallel scratches you can see on the right side of the boulder. These straia are at least 10,000 years old.
The bedrock that contained the stone formed about 500 million years ago in a warm shallow sea in a location very close to the equator.
The inspiration for the sculpture came from visits to ancient temples in Egypt and Peru. The unknown uses of such stone ritual sites create a mystique that goes beyond the physical aspect of the structure. If you are left wondering what the sculpture is for, then the mystique is successful.”

Our next session of 🧘🏽 “How to Move as Easily as Possible” with Polly Motley is THIS THURSDAY from 9–10:00 a.m.
Polly Motley, professional dancer and choreographer, will lead a body/mind session designed to release unnecessary tension and effort and help us move more easily in daily life. Focused attention, especially to the out breath, will allow more space into the body as we rock, roll, twist, and take the time our bodies need to let go of unneeded effort. This class is created to be accessible and easy, with exercises that begin on the floor and end on our feet.
📅 Additional Upcoming Session Dates: September 4 and October 9. These are free to the public and no registration is required. Attend one or all sessions.
RSVP encouraged by not required. Visit thecurrentnow.org/public-programs to learn more and view other upcoming public programs.

Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist relating to perspective, identity, commodity, media and popular culture. His work incorporates recognizable icons to explore their ability to reinforce generalizations developed around race, gender, and ethnicity. His iconic photography series, B®anded, superimposed bodies of Black men with the Nike logo, recalling the history of branding slaves in America as well as the literal and figural objectification of Black male bodies in contemporary culture. Thomas’ multimedia practice explores 20th-century protest images and often overlooked historical narratives. By adding hidden layers, Thomas asks the viewer to consider who is included in history and who is erased.
Thomas’s work is on view at The Current as part of the new indoor exhibition “It often rhymes” and was also featured in last year’s outdoor sculpture exhibition, “Exposed 2024.”

We’re thrilled to be welcoming Minh Ly, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont, to The Current next Thursday, 8/14 from 5-6:00 p.m for a public lecture —“Currently Speaking: Democracy Demands Accountability”
Ly’s book, “Answering to Us: Why Democracy Demands Accountability,” will be published by Princeton University Press in March 2026. Josiah Ober, the former chair of political science at Stanford, writes, "Answering to Us is a wide ranging and profound exploration of the fundamental value of collective self-government and what it takes to have and keep it. Ly’s original argument for democracy as equal accountability draws on an extraordinary mastery of political history, moral philosophy, and empirical social science."
The “Currently Speaking” series hosts experts in various contemporary art genres and media to encourage casual discourse and meaningful interactions between our community, speakers, and the art they showcase. All series events are free to the public. No reservation is required, and the gallery will be open beforehand for viewing the current exhibition. Refreshments will be served.
